The gates open on the fifteenth of June, and for the first time in sixty years, Harrow Lake begins to give up its dead town. Nora Ellery has spent a year and eight months learning to wear the keeping like her own skin, and she had let herself believe the worst of it was behind her. Then the summer drawdown starts lowering the lake thirty feet to repair the dam, and the drowned streets of Coldharbor rise out of the mud one roofline at a time: sill plates, doorsteps, a chapel steeple nobody has seen since 1961. A trespassing videographer walks past the tape at midnight and is never found at all. Down in the exposed mud, a state archaeologist's dig turns up a capstone with four family names carved into it and a fifth half-erased beside them, and Nora starts to understand that the bargain her family has kept for two hundred years was never the whole story. There was a girl in 1961 who was supposed to have gone west. There was a boy in 1794 whose name is still cut into the church floor. And there is a well beneath the nave that has been waiting, patiently, for the water to go all the way down. When the state moves to drain the dam for good, every keeping form Nora knows stops working, and the thing under Coldharbor stops being patient. It has an offer. It always has an offer. And with storm season closing in and the whole valley's water finally low enough to reach, this time it means to be paid. The Surfacing is the third book in the Harrow Lake supernatural horror series: a dread-forward gothic of drowned towns, inherited debts, and a keeper learning that some doors were built to stay underwater. The lake is not finished being unkept.
