Classification and ordination represent two different ways of bringing about the simplification necessary to render intelli- gible a complex set of vegetational data. Both approaches ne- cessarily lose a proportion of the information present in the original data, but the information lost, and the information retained and emphasised, is different in the two cases. Certain features of vegetation data lend themselves to treatment by or- dination, while other features favour the use of classification, and it is suggested that the most effective scheme of analysis for any extensive set of data will make complementary use of techniques of both kinds. The potential value of factor rotation methods, cornbining certain features of established classificati- on and ordination techniques, are briefly discussed. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Klassifieierunq und 'Ordination' sind zwei verschiedene Wege zur notwendigen Vereinfachung, um komplexe Vegetations angaben verstandlich zu machen. Seide Schritte fuhren zu einern Verlust an Information der ursprunglichen Werte, aber die verlorenen und zuruckbehaltenen Angaben sind in beiden Fallen unterschied- lich. Gewisse Charakteristiken der Vegetation neigen zu einer 'Ordination-Methode', andere werden durch die Klassifizierung besser ausgedruckt. Es wird vorgeschlagen, dass das wirksamste Schema zur Analyse einer ausgedehnten Reihe von Angaben beide Verfahren angewendet werden. Der potentielle Wert der Faktoren- Rotations-Methode, die gewisse Charakteristiken von beiden be- kannten Klassifizieruugs- und 'Ordinationstechniken' einschliesst, wird kurz besprochen.
