Torpor

In the autumn of 1996, Calvin Frost runs a turret lathe on the night shift at Corvel Machine Works, then drives home through the endless rain of Lake City to sit beside the machine that keeps his mother alive. The bills are stacking on the kitchen table and the century is running out. Then a flyer turns up on Calder Avenue with three words on it: GO TO Z. In the back of a shuttered car dealership, a soft-spoken man named Dorian Vale is selling something no one can quite believe: a sealed iron pod and a field that turns twenty years into a single grey afternoon. Whatever you are carrying, he promises, will be resolved by the time you wake. Cal signs on to keep the chillers running. On the last night of the millennium, he climbs into a tube himself. When the bolts finally loosen, he steps out into a Lake City he no longer recognizes, where a company called Coldharbor Systems has turned the afternoon into a product, glass towers hum with compressors in every closet, and a whole city is quietly choosing to sleep while the world is torn down around it. With a retired power-grid dispatcher, a sharp-eyed young scientist, a burned-out musician, and an iron automaton named Sable who has been waiting a very long time, Cal returns to the only thing he has ever trusted: his hands, his lathe, and the physics no one else bothered to understand. If the field can make people lie still for decades, it can be made to do something far greater. Torpor is a novel of grief, time, and stubborn human craft, told in the textures of cutting oil, copper windings, and late-night radio voices drifting through the static. Grounded in the grit of a dying industrial town and reaching toward the cold light of distant stars, it asks what we owe to the years we are given, and what it would take to stop sleeping through them. From Morgan Burns and the Ignite imprint of AM I AM Publishing comes a sweeping work of speculative fiction about one machinist who refuses to wait for a morning that will never come.
