Ask a CEO what their factory is worth, and you'll get a number before you finish the question. Here is the uncomfortable truth at the heart of this book: the world has spent a century getting very good at protecting intellectual property and remains remarkably bad at using it. Boards fear infringement more than they understand opportunity. Investors ask, "do you have IP?" and accept "yes" as an answer, when it should only ever be the first question in a much longer conversation. Founders spend their seed round on trademark filings and none of it on a licensing strategy that could have funded the next round.
