The Vagrant and the Mirror

Spain's most prolific serial killer left no trace for seven years. Between 1964 and 1971, Manuel Delgado Villegas — known as El Arropiero, after the sweet Andalusian syrup his father peddled along the country roads — killed seven people across three countries: a sleeping cook on a winter beach, a young French student in an Ibizan farmhouse, an elderly landowner by a Castilian river, a Barcelona businessman in his own warehouse, an elderly woman in a drainage culvert, a railway worker in the Bay of Cádiz, and the woman he was living with. He claimed forty-eight. Born to a dead mother and a road-bound father, raised in the working-class margins of Catalonia without literacy, language, or any form of adequate care, Delgado moved through the policing blind spots of Franco's Spain like a ghost — invisible to a system that had no mechanism for linking his scattered crimes across provincial borders. When he finally confessed in 1971, he did so not under coercion but under patient, empathic attention — and what poured out was one of the most extraordinary confessions in the history of European criminal investigation. The Vagrant and the Mirror is the first full-length English-language account of the Arropiero case: a forensic, moral, and historical reckoning with Spain's darkest unsolved story.
