# Chapter 1 ## ELARA The wards on their house had failed. Elara noticed it before Theron even pulled the travel-worn horses to a stop—the faint shimmer that should have greeted them at the property line was gone, dissolved into nothing during the four months they'd been away. The protective boundary she'd woven before they left, carefully layered with intent and her own blood, had unravelled into mere memory. She should fix it. Should dismount right now and spend what remained of her depleted magic reinforcing the wards before they even crossed the threshold. Instead, she sat motionless in the saddle, every muscle in her body screaming its exhaustion, and stared at the dark windows of the house that no longer felt like home. "Elara?" Theron's voice was gentle. Patient. The same tone he'd been using for weeks now, ever since the Northern Provinces mission had finally, mercifully, ended. "We're here." *Here.* As if that word meant something. As if the building before them—two stories of weathered stone and sagging shutters—was anything more than the place they returned to between deployments. "I know." She forced herself to swing down from the saddle, her legs nearly buckling when her boots hit the ground. Forty years old and feeling sixty. The binding ritual she'd performed to seal the treaty between the Northern clans had taken more from her than she'd admitted to anyone. Even now, three weeks later, her magic felt like a guttering candle instead of the steady flame it should be. Theron was already moving, muscle memory carrying him through the familiar routine. Unsaddling the horses. Hauling their packs toward the house. His movements were efficient, economical, but Elara could see the tension in his shoulders, the careful way he moved that spoke of his own exhaustion. She should help. Should at least grab her satchel. The front door opened with a creak that made her wince—another thing that had deteriorated in their absence. The hinges needed oiling. The floorboards in the entryway groaned under her weight, and the air inside smelled stale, layered with dust and the particular emptiness of a house left too long alone. Theron had already lit a lamp, the warm glow doing little to dispel the shadows. Elara watched him move through the space, setting down their bags, opening windows to let in the night air. They'd done this dance a hundred times. Return home. Unpack. Pretend they were people who actually lived here instead of transient ghosts passing through between crises. On the small table by the door sat a stack of correspondence. Official-looking envelopes with wax seals. Summons. Requests. *Urgent matters requiring the expertise of Elara and Theron .* Of course. There were always urgent matters. "I'll deal with those in the morning," Theron said, following her gaze. His voice was carefully neutral, which meant he was just as tired of this as she was.
