When Spirits Return is a novel by Pawan Bhatia. Mara Vance, a 34-year-old editor in Portland, receives a letter from her Aunt Lenore in Black Hollow: "Come home for Halloween. We need you." More letters appear supernaturally, warning the veil is thinning and the offerings are failing. Mara has avoided Black Hollow for seventeen years, since her father Jonathan died. She returns. Black Hollow is bound by an old bargain. In 1847, settlers abandoned their sick and dying in the mountain snow, including members of the Vance family. The dead did not stay dead. On the first Halloween they came down and stood outside the cabins. The living, ashamed and afraid, made a bargain: salt lines, iron nails, and carved lanterns would keep the dead to one night a year, when they could stand at doors but not enter. Each generation, a Vance Keeper renewed the bargain by paying a price. Lenore gave her aging in 1979 and has not aged for forty-seven years. Jonathan gave his life in 2009, buying seventeen years for Mara to grow up. Now the bargain is failing. Mara learns she alone can light the candle inside her father's pumpkin, carved before his death and preserved on the porch. She lights it, and a cold blue flame appears. The dead come home: neighbors, strangers, masked founders, and Danny Kowalski, a boy who drowned when Mara was ten. Her father appears and reveals the truth. The door was never meant to be a wall. To end the cycle, the living must welcome the dead permanently, not for one night. Mara must accept being known by them forever. She discovers the ledger of Keepers, including Temperance Vance's 1847 diary and Jonathan's final entry: "Somebody will have to ask." The dead are not monsters; they are the abandoned, the forgotten, and the loved. She carries the pumpkin to the square beneath the oak and opens the door. The dead and living mingle; the salt and iron fail; the masks fall away. Her father tells her it was only water, meaning fear. Mara returns to Portland, plants the seventeen-year-old pumpkin seeds, writes a book about Black Hollow, and calls her mother every Sunday. Lenore begins to age. The following October, Lenore writes again, inviting Mara home for Halloween. Mara says she will come.
