For thousands of years, work was an almost inseparable condition of human life. People worked to obtain food, pay for housing, educate their children, care for their families, and secure their future. Work could provide pride, identity, and fulfillment, but it could also bring exhaustion, inequality, uncertainty, and fear. Until one day, it was no longer necessary. In this novel, robots and artificial intelligence do not rebel against humanity. They do not destroy cities, seize governments, or seek to dominate their creators. Something far more extraordinary happens: machines simply become so capable that society discovers it no longer needs human beings to produce almost anything. Factories operate on their own. Then a question that had defined human existence for thousands of years disappears: "How am I going to survive?" And another, much more difficult question takes its place: "What am I going to do with my life if I no longer need to work to live?" Daniel Arce, after thirty-seven years working in a factory, belongs to the generation that witnesses this transformation. His life had been organized around work, schedules, wages, and the responsibility of supporting his family. When his job disappears, he discovers that the freedom he had always hoped for can also bring uncertainty and bewilderment. Together with Elena, his children, and his grandchildren, Daniel enters a world where basic needs are guaranteed. Having a home, eating, receiving medical care, studying, and traveling are no longer dependent on a salary. But not everything becomes unlimited. Land, nature, privacy, unique experiences, and, above all, human time remain scarce. The meaning of wealth also changes. Traditional money loses much of its importance as new forms of value emerge: priority credits, reputation, access to experiences, and access to other people's time. A robot-made sofa may be almost free, while a table crafted over several months by an artisan can acquire enormous value precisely because it contains something a machine cannot manufacture: human time, history, and meaning. Artificial intelligence becomes civilization's great companion. It can answer almost any question, anticipate problems, and recommend the best options. But the more precise it becomes, the deeper the question of freedom becomes. If a machine can tell us what the best decision is, are we still free when we choose something else? Humanity discovers that living is not simply a matter of maximizing well-being, reducing risks, or choosing the most efficient option. It also means making mistakes, loving without guarantees, creating things that are unnecessary, traveling without a perfect plan, seeking challenges, preserving mysteries, and deciding what truly matters. "The Age Without Work" is not a novel about machines that want to replace human beings. It is a novel about what happens when they finally succeed. And about the question that remains after almost all material problems have been solved: What does it mean to live when survival is no longer the greatest challenge?
