Daniel, an ordinary man who has spent his entire life believing that work is one of the foundations of human existence, watches the transformation unfold around him. At first, he celebrates the new world. Later, he begins to wonder whether humanity has gained freedom or simply lost one of the structures that gave meaning to its existence. His family, his friends, and the people he meets confront the same question in different ways. Some discover new forms of creativity. Others devote themselves to learning. Some travel. Some search for pleasure. Others become obsessed with reputation, relationships, competition, entertainment, or artificial experiences. And some simply cannot find a reason to get up in the morning. As robots become increasingly capable and artificial intelligence assumes more responsibility for the organization of society, humanity faces a challenge that no previous technological revolution had ever created. If survival no longer requires effort, what will make life meaningful? If nobody needs your labor, can your life still have value? If machines can create almost everything humans can create, what remains uniquely human?
