Beneath the Ashes: Uncovering the Truth Behind the Helderberg Tragedy. The Helderberg air disaster of 1987 remains one of the most baffling aviation mysteries in South African history. Despite extensive investigations, the source of ignition that led to the tragic crash of South African Airways Flight 295 was never determined. My personal connection to this tragedy runs deep, as my father, a flight engineer at the time, shared crucial information with me before his passing. He was originally scheduled to be the main engineer on Flight 295 but swapped shifts with a colleague, Joe Belagarda, just two days before the fateful flight. This revelation has driven me to write this book, which sheds new light on the events surrounding the disaster. Unlike other accounts, my manuscript avoids speculation and conspiracy theories, instead focusing on verifiable evidence and a thorough analysis of the facts. By re-examining the evidence and drawing on my father's insights, I aim to provide a plausible explanation for the cause of the ignition. What sets my manuscript apart is its rigorous approach to investigating the tragedy. To ensure the accuracy and validity of my research, I have shared my work with key stakeholders, including Boeing, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Royal Aeronautical Society, all of whom were involved in the original investigation.
