Nato a Porto Empedocle (Agrigento), Andrea Camilleri ha vissuto per anni a Roma. Dal 1939 al 1943, dopo un periodo in un collegio da cui viene espulso, studia ad Agrigento al Liceo Classico Empedocle dove ottiene la maturità classica senza dover sostenere l’esame a causa dell’imminente sbarco degli alleati in Sicilia. A giugno inizia, come ricorda lo scrittore, "una sorta di mezzo periplo della Sicilia a piedi o su camion tedeschi e italiani sotto un continuo mitragliamento per cui bisognava gettarsi a terra, sporcarsi di polvere di sangue, di paura".
