China and the Manchus is a historical book written by Herbert A. Giles. The book provides a detailed account of the Manchu dynasty that ruled China from 1644 to 1912. The author traces the origins of the Manchu people, their rise to power, and their impact on Chinese society, culture, and politics. The book covers a wide range of topics, including the conquest of China by the Manchus, the establishment of the Qing dynasty, the Manchu emperors, the role of the Manchus in Chinese society, and the decline of the dynasty. The author also discusses the influence of Western powers on China during the Manchu era and the events that led to the downfall of the dynasty. Overall, ""China and the Manchus"" is a comprehensive and informative book that provides readers with a deep understanding of one of the most significant periods in Chinese history. It is said that no fewer than thirty thousand adherents were executed before the trouble was finally suppressed; from which statement it is easy to gather that under whatever form the White Lily Society may have been originally initiated, its activities were now of a much more serious character, and were, in fact, plainly directed against the power and authority of the Manchus. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
