Compositore statunitense. Nato a Brooklyn da genitori ebrei russi immigrati (il loro nome originale era Kaplan), iniziò gli studi musicali a New York, per poi continuarli, dal 1921, a Parigi con N. Boulanger. Tornato negli Stati Uniti, organizzò con R. Sessions concerti di musica contemporanea. Dal 1927 al ''37 insegnò alla New School for Social Research di New York, e negli anni 1935-44 e 1951-52 alla Harvard University. In seguito insegnò composizione al Berkshire Music Center. Nei primi lavori si mostrò sensibile alle manifestazioni della musica d''avanguardia; come nelle Variazioni per pianoforte, del 1930, nelle quali l''uso percussivo dello strumento e l''organizzazione geometrica dei moduli ritmici richiamano Bartók e Stravinskij. Poi, verso la metà degli anni Trenta, optò per una scrittura...
