The Dog Show

Every August since 1902, the same silver Afghan hound has won Best in Show at the Ashcombe County Show. Same dog. Same face. Same owner, if you look closely at the photographs. Nobody looks closely. When Halcyon Majestic walks past, the dogs go silent and the crowd goes soft-eyed, and every year, on the Saturday night of the show, a prize-winning dog disappears from its bench. The collar is always found still buckled. Owen Prothero is a nervous accountant from Kettering who has never shown a dog in his life. With his mum in hospital with a broken hip, he's been sent to Ashcombe with her twelve-year-old Pekingese, Pudding: one cloudy eye, a snore like a diesel generator and a total contempt for everyone. Pudding was supposed to come last. Instead she sneezes on the judge and wins the Toy Group, and three hundred strangers fall in love with her. That's when the silver dog turns its head. Now Owen has a £50,000 bribe to turn down, a chain-smoking terrier woman with forty years of scrapbooks, a young vet whose stethoscope picked up eleven heartbeats a minute, and two tiny grey grooming sisters who carry very sharp little hooks. Midnight in the grooming tent shows him what lies under that famous silver coat, and he works out that the only weapon he has is a dusty rule nobody has read since 1903. Best in Show is at three o'clock. Pudding is in the final. And something very old is hungry. The Dog Show is a horror-comedy about cream teas, county pride, the things we'd do to be adored, and a very small dog who refuses to adore anything at all.
