Finalmente, dopo anni di attesa, la redazione definitiva di una storia del legendarium di Tolkien che era stata sempre appena accennata nel Silmarillon e in altri scritti. Di fatto, Christopher ha svolto un lavoro esemplare di raccolta, organizzazione e revisione delle fonti, nonché di filologia, per scrivere la stesura finale della storia della caduta di Gondolin. Ci vengono presentate tutte le sfumature, le analogie, le differenze e le novità rispetto al materiale originale apparso precedentemente solo frammentariamente. Le spiegazioni sono sempre esaustive e corredate da bibliografia e da un pratico vocabolario. Possiamo dire che questo testo rappresenta una sorta di mini trilogia insieme a I figli di Hurin e Beren e Luthien, nel tracciare alcuni aspetti fondamentali degli elfi e degli uomini avvenuti durante la Prima e la Seconda Era della Terra di Mezzo. L'edizione è meravigliosamente curata e le illustrazioni di Alan Lee danno un valore aggiunto inestimabile. Da non perdere per tutti gli appassionati di Tolkien.
