Pharos Books, 2026

In The Fixed Period, Anthony Trollope ventures into speculative fiction with a thought-provoking and satirical exploration of a future society governed by a radical social experiment. Set in the late 19th century, the novel imagines a world where the concept of a "fixed period" of life is instituted, after which individuals are required to undergo a controlled and dignified end. The story centers on the fictional island nation of Britannula, where this bold policy is put into practice. Trollope delves into the moral, ethical, and social implications of such a system, highlighting the conflicts and challenges that arise when a society attempts to regulate the length and quality of life. With his characteristic wit and insight, Trollope examines themes of aging, the role of government in personal affairs, and the nature of human dignity. The Fixed Period is a compelling and innovative work that invites readers to reflect on the balance between individual autonomy and societal control, making it a notable entry in Trollope's body of work and a significant contribution to the genre of speculative fiction.
