The Flying Stars

On the day after Christmas in a clockpunk Cape Colony, the fabulously wealthy Mr. Leopold Fischer arrives at Colonel Adams's house carrying three legendary diamonds called the Flying Stars. Also present are John Crook, a radical pamphleteer who loves the colonel's daughter Ruby; a long-absent uncle from the interior, James Blount; and a mild, insignificant priest named Father Brown. When Blount suggests an impromptu harlequinade, the household throws itself into the performance. A costumed guard arrives, supposedly an old actor friend. During the chaos, the harlequin dances with the guard and leaves him lying motionless. The audience thinks it is part of the act. Then the diamonds are discovered missing. Suspicion falls on Crook, the outspoken Leveler. But Father Brown has been watching: the brass peacock that eats bread, the ticking artificial leg, the small movement hidden in the dance. The man playing Blount is not Blount at all. He is Flambeau, the greatest thief in the world, and he has fed the diamonds to the bird. Father Brown retrieves the stones and confronts Flambeau in the moonlit garden. He warns the thief that evil runs downward like a spring, and asks him to stop before his spring runs out. Flambeau comes down, tired and defeated. In time, he becomes a maker of timepieces and at last has his own key entered in the guild register under his own name. A Father Brown–inspired clockpunk mystery of theft, mercy, and redemption.
