She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. — John 20:15 There was a gardener at that tomb. He kept the beds in a rich man's garden on the shoulder of rock outside the city wall, and he was there that morning — at work he had done ten thousand times, a stone's throw from the center of the world. He is nobody's idea of a witness. He is the man holding the water jar, a part of the walls, unseen by the mourners who trampled his seedbeds carrying a body up to the new tomb before the Sabbath fell. Now the Sabbath is over, the great stone is rolled back, and a woman is weeping in his garden at first light. She turns to a stranger in the grey and asks him — the wrong man — where the body has been taken. The gardener kneels in the churned sand, unasked, and goes on with the only work he knows. The Gardener is a quiet, luminous short story about standing at the edge of a great mercy and being taken, by everyone, for scenery — and about the ordinary, patient work that goes on while the world is remade. Story ten and the close of The Reed & The Flame, from the author of The Candle.
