Compositore inglese. Lasciata la carriera commerciale, dal 1886 all'88 studiò al conservatorio di Lipsia, stabilendosi poi in Francia. Amico di Grieg, ne risentì l'influsso; elaborò uno stile vagamente impressionistico, meditativo e malinconico, che fa di lui uno dei rappresentanti più significativi della moderna musica inglese. Scrisse alcune opere di teatro, una ventina di pezzi per orchestra di carattere rievocativo (fra cui Fantasia in un giardino d'estate), grandi composizioni corali e varia musica da camera.
