Jean-Jacques Rousseaus „Du Contract Social“: Zwischen Demokratie und totalitärem Autor

Dabei wurde folgendermaßen vorgegangen: Zunächst wurden die Begriffe Demokratie und Totalitarismus operationalisiert und schließlich einzelne Aspekte des Contract Social auf beide Formen hin überprüft. Ergebnis war, dass der Gemeinwille durch seinen Allgemeinheitsanspruch und seine Dominanz gegenüber dem individuellen Willen totalitäre Züge trägt. Die Volkssouveränität hingegen besitzt ein starkes demokratisches Fundament. Herrschaft ist für Rousseau nicht nur im Volk legitimiert, sondern muss auch von diesem selbst ausgeführt werden. Sein Freiheitsbegriff bedeutet politische Selbstbestimmung und damit Freiheit durch selbstgegebene Gesetze. Der Gesetzgeber, den das Volk vor Übernahme seiner Aufgabe benötigt, kann aufgrund seiner Überredungskünste als totalitäre Gefahr angesehen werden. Problematischer ist das Eigentum, welches durch den Souverän in Anspruch genommen werden kann. Wohingegen Pluralismus in Rousseaus Republik zwar nicht erwünscht, aber auch nicht verboten ist. Abstract The target of this work entitled „Jean-Jacques Roussea’s Social Contract: between democracy and a totalitarian writer“ was to show that Rousseau’s Social Contract includes democratic aspects as well as totalitarian ones. To prove this first of all was tried to define ‘demovracy’ and ‘totalitarianism’. After that, important elements of the Social Contract were analysed considering those definitions. The results are, that especially Rousseau’s general will is dangerous because of his high public-level and his dominance over any individual will. On the other side there is the sovereignty of the people, which has a significant democratic base. Control is only legitimated in the people and by the people. Rousseau’s imagination of freedom means political autonomy by selfgiven laws. The legislator, who is needed during the development of society, could become dangerous if he takes advantage of religious means. In contrast to the legislator, ownership is more in danger, because the sovereignty can take it if it’s, in its opinion, important for the common use. Pluralism is not gladly seen in Rousseau’s Republic, but it’s also not forbidden.
