Leopold Stokowski

1882, Londra

Direttore d'orchestra statunitense di origine polacca. Studiò in Europa; dopo essersi stabilito negli Stati Uniti, dal 1908 diresse l'Orchestra di Cincinnati e dal 1912 al '36 quella di Filadelfia, presentando anche composizioni dei maggiori autori contemporanei (Mahler, Schönberg, Varèse, Berg, Ives ecc., fino a Xenakis). Considerato tra i protagonisti della vita musicale del suo tempo, come interprete fu criticato per la propensione alla magniloquenza retorica.
