—What do you want me to get you for Christmas, Jessie? I'm going shopping tomorrow. There are only two weeks left, and I hate leaving things to the last minute. Jessie stopped applying mascara for a moment to smile at her elderly friend and landlady. "Do you know any stores that sell men's clothing?" he asked, a mischievous gleam in his dark eyes. Dora opened hers wide. —Men? But ten minutes ago you told me that all men are scoundrels and you'd rather live without them. Jessie shrugged. —That was ten minutes ago. Getting ready tonight reminded me of when I was young and cheerful... and didn't know anything about the opposite sex. What I wouldn't give to be that girl again, just for one night. You know, going out with a gorgeous guy... "If that fantasy came true, where would that gorgeous boy take you?" Dora asked skeptically. —I don't know, somewhere nice for dinner and then a club. And then he'd take me back to his bachelor pad and then... That last thought surprised her. Since having Emily, she hadn't missed men. She hadn't wanted to be with anyone. Now, suddenly, the idea of dating again seemed very pleasant. More than pleasant, if she were honest. Almost a necessity. Her hormones, apparently, had started to kick in again. Jessie let out a sigh filled with frustration. And irritation. Men weren't necessary and only served to complicate her life. It was always like that. Useless creatures all of them. Except for one thing! Now that her hormones were raging again, she had to admit that nothing compares to having a good lover. Emily's father had been good in bed. But he was also a madman, whose adventurous and irresponsible spirit had led to his death while snowboarding down the mountain. Before Lessie knew she was going to have his child. Jessie had discovered, at the august age of twenty-eight, that members of the opposite sex who were good in bed, irresistible seducers like Lyall, were rarely willing to commit. And she suspected that if Lyall himself hadn't died, he wouldn't have stayed with her and her daughter. No, she was much better off without a man. For the time being, at least. Emily was only four years old and very impressionable. The last thing she needed was for her mom to start dating men who were only interested in one thing. There was no future in that. And no happiness. Men could have sex without suffering or commitment. Women... well, it wasn't so easy. And it had taken a long time to heal Lyall's wound. By her death and by the subsequent discovery that she hadn't been the only woman in his life. "What I really want for Christmas," Jessie said, putting her cosmetics in her bag, "is a decent job at an advertising agency."
