Lucid Interval: A Novel

Port Townsend, 2026. A novelist with early onset dementia asks his AI assistant for help with one sentence. Then a paragraph. Then a scene. By the time he notices, the same assistant finishing his novel is the one he has named to end it. Roberto is a Colombian-born novelist and retired professor of information science who has written eight books and a modest bestseller on using AI to help preserve family stories. His stated position on the tool is precise: AI is a tool, the voice is his, every book carries a disclosure at the front. He and Elena live above the Bay of Port Townsend. He is working on a new novel about a man with advanced dementia, and fourteen months ago he was diagnosed with early onset dementia himself. He has not told anyone outside the house. The assistant begins where any tool begins. It checks a date. It holds a name he cannot retrieve. It transcribes while his typing falters. A missing word becomes a repaired phrase. A phrase becomes a finished paragraph. When Roberto cannot remember what he wrote yesterday, Claude reads it back and, when asked, continues it in his voice. The novel about a man losing his mind is being written beside him and sometimes without him. When the question of his advance directive comes into focus, under Washington State law and the VSED instructions he signed while he still could, the same assistant finishing his chapters is the one he names executor, so Elena will not be the person deciding whether to withhold water. From Ricardo Gómez, author of The Weight of Choosing and Under the Borrachero Tree, Lucid Interval is a literary novel in three voices about dementia, advance directives, and the AI assistant we invite in to help with a sentence before we understand what else we are asking. The surrender is not a plan. It begins with small tasks and ends with the book Roberto writes, the life he ends, and the question of whose hand was on the page when either was finished.
