an interesting read

The author says she’s worked on this book for 18 years, this is how dedicated she was to this project and you can clearly tell. Vanessa is such a complex character who I appreciated throughout the whole book and the excellent character building made it possible for me to relate to her, to feel what she felt so many times while reading. And Strane… What is there to say about him? I sometimes felt manipulated by him too, fascinated by him too, disgusted by him too, just like Vanessa. This book is obviously not for everyone as it deals with pedophilia and sexual abuse but does it do these topics justice? Absolutely. I obviously would never speak on behalf of survivors but I feel like the way Vanessa dealt with her trauma and processed it was extremely realistic. Many people compared this book to Lolita but there’s so much more to unfold here. Reading about these terrible things from the victim’s point of view, seeing what went on in her head, how she interpreted things, how she processed them, the way she tried to convince herself of things that just weren’t real…
