Neptune – Neptune, Ice Giants, Outer Planets – Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun in our solar system. It is an ice giant, composed mostly of hydrogen, helium, water, ammonia, and methane, which gives it its deep blue color. Neptune has a dynamic atmosphere with strong winds, the fastest in the solar system, reaching speeds of up to 2,100 kilometers per hour (1,300 mph). The planet is known for its Great Dark Spot, a storm system similar to Jupiter's Great Red Spot, though it has since disappeared and reappeared in different locations. Neptune has 14 known moons, with Triton being the largest and one of the few moons in the solar system with a retrograde orbit, suggesting it may have been captured by Neptune's gravity. The planet has a faint ring system and is one of the coldest places in the solar system, with average temperatures around -214°C (-353°F). Neptune was discovered in 1846 through mathematical predictions rather than direct observation. It is named after the Roman god of the sea due to its deep blue color and distant location.
