The Oxford Reading Tree Green Sparks series explains and illustrates the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals in an age-appropriate way. The series supports development of all reading skills by combining phonic progression with essential vocabulary, as well as extending the reader's comprehension of the issues around sustainability in global and local contexts. Haruki finds a hermit crab with a plastic bottle top, instead of a shell. After finding a shell for the crab, Haruki then decides to clean up the beach of all the rubbish. Haruki and the Hermit Crab focuses on UN SDG 14 Life below water, but also on UN SDG 15 Life on land.
