Their flashlights bit into the darkness as they trekked deeper, the thrum of insects and distant call of nightjars mixed with something else—an odd, keening howl that made the hair on Bruce's neck stand. By nightfall, they'd pitched their tent in a shadow-swamped clearing beneath a colossal, ancient fig tree. The air buzzed with a sense of being watched; the only warmth came from their small campfire. #### **Chapter 2: Whispers in the Canopy** As Sumo unwrapped a sandwich, shivering despite the humid air, Bruce noticed strange markings on the tree bark.
