Reason for Transfer

Every Friday, a line forms at the money-transfer counter. Workers send money to the people they love, often while hiding how little they have left for themselves. Reason for Transfer tells the stories behind those payments: a nurse paying school fees for cousins, a construction worker missing his daughter's childhood, and a former athlete learning how to help his family without losing everything. It also follows the people back home—the children, parents, and relatives whose lives are shaped by the money and the distance. Told through the format of money-transfer receipts, these connected stories explore love, sacrifice, guilt, family obligation, and the difficult work of setting limits. The people are composites, but the pressures they face are shared by families across the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and beyond. With practical guidance for both senders and receivers, Reason for Transfer asks how families can support one another without making money the price of belonging. It is for anyone who has sent money home, depended on someone else's support, or felt they could never say no. You are allowed to be tired. You are allowed to set a limit.
