A million people took to the streets. The secret police never saw it coming. And the man who ruled East Germany had made sure of it. In June 1953, workers in more than seven hundred East German towns rose against a regime that had built one of history's most feared secret police to prevent exactly this. The Stasi had informants in the factories, agents in the unions, and morale reports filed from every corner of the economy. Yet the men at the top were blindsided. The reason lies in the archives. From 1950, Walter Ulbricht taught his ministry a dangerous lesson: when policy fails, blame the West. Strikes became sabotage. Hunger became provocation. Workers' grievances over wages, prices, and impossible quotas were rewritten, line by line, as the work of foreign agents. Officers who wanted to keep their jobs learned to tell their masters what they wished to hear. One union man later confessed that when he reported the truth, his superiors "embellished" it. Drawing on rarely used Stasi files from the years before the uprising, and on the voices of the miners, bricklayers, and factory hands who lived it, this book sets the official story beside the real one. Then it follows the gap between them to the Politburo itself, where leaders admitted in secret what they would never say in public: they had lost touch with their own people. The Report That Lied is a gripping account of how a dictatorship blinded itself, and a warning about what happens when power punishes the truth.
