This book bears witness to the extraordinary creative and artistic ferment in Russia in the early 20th century. The works, belonging to thirteen Russian museums and a private collector, are an expression of the currents (Post-Impressionism, Primitivism, Cubo-Futurism, Suprematism and Constructivism) and leading figures of Russian art history in those years: Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinskij, Natalia Goncharova, Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov and Vladimir Tatlin. The book documents and extraordinary period between the two revolutions of 1905 and 1917 when formidable artistic and intellectual resources were mobilized in every cultural field in an attempt to blend the repertoires of the Slavic tradition with the languages of the new century, paving the way for the development of the artistic currents of the 20th century. The essays in this book describe the historical context, including the relationship and influences between the Russian art world and that of the West.
