One packet of special seeds. One enormous dream. Can Sam and the Garden Friends grow a pumpkin big enough to win the State Fair — and maybe someday chase the 3,156-pound world record.. **How big can a pumpkin grow? Sam is about to find out!** When Pops orders special giant-pumpkin seeds from the seed catalog, Sam gets the project of a lifetime: grow a LEGEND. With the help of his Garden Friends — Charly the praying mantis, Tina the pink spider, Zip the garden snake, Betty the ladybug, and Fred the muskrat — Sam plants the seeds in spring and tends the patch all summer long. There's a drought to beat (and a Great Flood when the irrigation day goes hilariously wrong — Charly captains a leaf, Tina sails her web, and Fred and Zip turn rescuers!). There's a wagon scale to build, three giant pumpkins to name and measure, and a compost bin full of banana peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, grass clippings, earthworms — and one magic ingredient — that turns Sam's pumpkins into rocket-fueled giants. Sam even learns the true story of the biggest pumpkin ever grown — Ron Wallace's world-record 3,156-pounder, the first pumpkin in history over 3,000 pounds — and sets his sights on the State Fair's Great Weigh-Off. And when the fair is over, Sam makes the decision that makes Goliath the champion more than any ribbon could: the great pumpkin goes to the Food Bank, to become pies and bread for families who need them.
