The Eighth Broadcast

In 1986, one of television's most ambitious adventure programmes ended in the Patagonian wilderness. Its field reporter vanished. Its final episode was destroyed. Its researcher, Inez Bell, was blamed for sending the expedition in the wrong direction. The truth was never broadcast. Forty years later, Inez's fourteen-year-old granddaughter, Mara Bell, receives an invitation to complete the journey her grandmother abandoned. Determined to clear Inez's name and discover what really happened, Mara joins three other teenagers whose families are connected to the original expedition. Together, Mara, Téo, June and Paloma begin an extraordinary journey across the Americas. Their route carries them from the mountains of Denali and the Canadian tundra to the shifting waterways of the Louisiana bayous. It continues through Amazonia, the streets and television archives of Rio de Janeiro, the high paths of the Peruvian Andes, the seemingly endless emptiness of the Atacama Desert, and finally to the ice fields of Patagonia. At every destination, they encounter another fragment of the past: missing sections of old broadcasts; maps that have been deliberately altered; witnesses who refuse to speak on camera; secret recordings hidden for decades; and communities whose knowledge was never meant to be collected or owned. But the young explorers soon realise that their expedition is not what it appears to be. Someone is monitoring their conversations. Someone is changing the story shown to the public. And someone needs the teenagers to complete a map that the original explorers risked everything to leave unfinished. At the centre of the mystery lies Atlas Zero—a hidden network of geographical knowledge, emergency routes, changing landscapes, protected places and human testimony. In the right hands, it could save lives. In the wrong hands, it could expose vulnerable communities and turn their knowledge into something that can be bought, controlled and exploited. To uncover the truth, Mara must confront more than dangerous terrain and a decades-old conspiracy. She must also face the possibility that her grandmother was neither entirely innocent nor entirely guilty. Inez protected people, but she also deceived those closest to her. Téo is hiding an agreement that could destroy the group's friendship. June must decide whether protecting knowledge can become as dangerous as stealing it. Paloma must confront the difference between recording the truth and having the right to reveal it. As trust fractures and the expedition closes in on its final destination, Mara faces a choice that could clear her grandmother's name, make her famous and finally complete Atlas Zero. But completing the map may be the greatest mistake of all.
