Great book, which deserves widespread use in the professional world of psychiatry, but also in terms of popular knowledge. The numerous anti-psychiatric experiments cited in the book are all from first-hand experiences of Professor Di Fiorino over the course of forty years, for having wanted to visit them and managing, sometimes, to work side by side with the experimenters. Mine is the experience as a father who has known, through the suffering of his son, what ideology in power means. The stupidity and farce of dogmas and slogans, and the brutality and cynicism of pseudo-psychiatrists, untouchables because of the do-ut-des with politic cronies. Basaglia, a Venetian psychiatrist, was the prophet of Italian anti-psychiatry who in 1978 became a state law. According of Basaglia placements, the law decreed the end of psychiatric institutions, with the closure of existing. The construction of new hospitals was banned. Some passages of Basaglia's thought: This is in the recent history (partially actual) of a society organized on the clear division between those who have (who possesses in real, concrete sense) and who have not; from which derives the mystified division between the good and the bad, the healthy and the patient, the repectable and the non-respectable. The position are - in this dimension - still clear and precise: the paternal authority is oppressive and arbitrary, the school is based on blackmail and threat, the employer exploits the worker; the Mental hospital destroys the mental patient." To the care and training criteria Basaglia did not pay due attention, thinking that the deinstitutionalization and the fight to the medical power was the fundamental step to solve every 'pathology'. One last tremendous reflection by the author: Deinstitutionalization is not always a shift in the locus of mental healthcare from hospitals to the community, but often the real passage is to the condition of homelessness, incarceration or suicide.
