The Soloist

André Baganz, 2026

An unforgettable true-crime memoir of survival, racial identity, and unyielding resistance inside East Germany's most notorious Stasi prison. Growing up as an Afro-German in the overwhelmingly white society of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), André Baganz felt like an outsider from early childhood. Marginalized by systemic prejudice and yearning for basic human freedom, his desperate attempts to flee to the West were repeatedly thwarted by fortified borders and secret police surveillance. Branded a security risk and issued a restrictive "PM 12" identity card, Baganz refused to accept a life trapped behind the Iron Curtain. In September 1981, at just twenty years old, Baganz staged a harrowing, armed jailbreak from a holding facility in Frankfurt (Oder). What began as a desperate bid for liberty spiraled into a high-stakes standoff involving taken hostages, heavy gunfire, and the tragic death of a police officer. Convicted of terrorism and attempted murder, Baganz received a brutal life sentence and was thrown into Bautzen II—the Stasi's infamous maximum-security prison for political enemies. Buried alive in a tiny cell for five grueling years of total solitary confinement, Baganz endured relentless psychological terror, brutal forced feedings during hunger strikes, and covert Stasi interrogations. Yet, through physical discipline and an unshakeable belief in his ultimate freedom, he refused to let the totalitarian apparatus break his spirit. The Soloist: Flight from the Stasi State is a gripping, firsthand account of a young man's battle against a totalitarian regime. From the dark corridors of Bautzen II and confrontations with secret police interrogators to the historic fall of the Berlin Wall and his dramatic release, Baganz delivers a raw, deeply human story of endurance, justice, and the indestructible drive for self-determination
