Leonard Bernstein

1918, Lawrence, Massachusetts

Compositore, direttore d'orchestra e pianista statunitense. Allievo di W. Piston per la composizione e di F. Reiner per la direzione d'orchestra, succedette nel 1951 a S.A. Kussevitzky alla direzione del Berkshire Music Center di Tanglewood. Dal 1956 al 1966 fu direttore stabile della Filarmonica di New York; in questo periodo furono famose le sue trasmissioni televisive di «concerti per i giovani», soprattutto quelle dedicate alle sinfonie di Beethoven, in cui alternava interpretazione e spiegazione della musica. In seguito diresse concerti sinfonici e opere teatrali nelle principali città del mondo, nonché al Metropolitan, alla Scala e all'Opera di Vienna. Fu compositore eclettico, di ispirazione neoromantica, sensibile al folclore nordamericano. Compose le opere in 1 atto Trouble in Tahiti...
