Eugène Marais, is seen as a genius in his native country, South Africa, and across the world. Natural Science. Robert Ardrey, American scientist-anthropologist, held Marais' work in the Natural Sciences greater than that of Albert Einstein in mathematics. Marais' studies of white ants and baboons in their natural environment, founded the animal behaviour sciences. In 1969 Ardrey wrote of him: 'As a scientist he was unique, supreme in his time, yet a worker in a science unborn.' He is the first South African whose research report had been included in the annals of the authoritative Smithsonian Institution. Marais' scientific works have been plagiarized at least five times, the most of any scientist, even blatantly by other scientists. He performed the first medical treatment by means of hypnosis in South Africa and was veered by his fellow countrymen as 'Die Wonderdokter' – The Miracle Worker. He discovered of a new Cycad species, which was named after him. His books 'The Soul of the White Ant', 'The Soul of the Ape' and 'My Friends the Baboons', translated into all major world languages are never out of print. Marais is hailed as the father of Ethology, the study of animal behaviour. Politics. Eugène Marais struggled fiercely with Paul Kruger for the independence and advancement of the Z.A.R.. Paul Kruger silences him by two acts curbing him and press freedom, yet in his darkest hour Paul Kruger calls on Marais to negotiate with British mine bosses and politicians. Marais, advisor to the British Government, shaped the political landscape after the Anglo-Boer War and negotiated favourable peace deals for his fellow countrymen, which was included in the peace treaty. Chamberlain, after meeting with Marais, reported: 'He is a very intelligent man & made a considerable impression on me. He was quite frank and expressed irreconcilable hostility to British rule'. Marais convinced British leaders to cease immoral supremacy and predicted that the suffering caused by Imperialism would denigrate the Empire. The Z.A.R . was the last country Britain seized during 1901. It is the first country that the British Empire returned unconditionally only 5 years later, largely as a result of Marais' influence on British decision makers. The Afrikaans language. Eugène Marais wrote poetry from the age of13. Marais wrote the 85 most important words in Afrikaans, 'Winternag'. (A Winter Night), which was setto music by 49 composers. He championed the Second Afrikaanse Taalbeweging(language movement)and is its most prolific contributor. At 19 he was one of the youngest newspaper editors ever in South Africa. He founded an Afrikaans women's magazine. During 2003 Marais was honoured by a panel of international literary scholars as one of the top 15 African writersof the 20th century*.* An opinion poll in 2012 by RSG and Leserskring (Afrikaans radio and book distributor respectively) included 5 of Marais' poems in the list of the 100 most popular Afrikaans poems. A remarkable five of Marais was included, whilst 'Winternag',was selected as the most popular Afrikaans poem of all time. In 2022 a chapter on Marais was included in Nick Dall's book as 'Legends: People Who Changed South Africa for the Better'. In this remarkable illustrated book consisting of 269 pages, the reader is taken on Eugène Marais' life path. The reader will experience Marais' joy and sorrow, his genial mind, his vision, his diversity and his perseverance. The reader will accompany him on his excurions into the Waterberg Bushveld, and to the offices of the Anglo Boer War decision makers in Britain. A book that will be read over and over again, also for all the life lessons to be learned from it.
