The History of Witchcraft in Europe Throughout the Ages surveys the changing meanings of witchcraft from medieval demonology and judicial persecution to folklore, superstition, and modern historical inquiry. Its selections range across antiquarian narrative, legal and ecclesiastical history, ethnographic observation, Gothic-inflected prose, and skeptical social commentary. Accounts of trials, Sabbath lore, regional traditions, and the cultural afterlives of accusation make the volume a capacious record of how European societies imagined fear, heresy, gender, and the supernatural. Its contributors—historians, folklorists, theologians, literary figures, and social critics writing principally in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—bring markedly different evidentiary habits and interpretive commitments to the subject. Together, they reflect the era's antiquarian recovery of local custom, Romantic fascination with the uncanny, comparative study of myth, and growing critique of religious and judicial persecution. Their varied national and disciplinary perspectives reveal witchcraft not as a single phenomenon but as a shifting meeting point of popular belief, institutional power, and literary imagination. This collection is especially valuable for readers seeking to compare perspectives rather than receive a single authoritative narrative. Students of European history, folklore, religion, law, and Gothic literature will find abundant material for tracing continuities and disagreements across genres. By placing documentary inquiry beside imaginative and polemical writing, the volume fosters a rich dialogue about the making, meaning, and memory of witchcraft.
