Rule Seven: Nine Rules for the Night Shift, One of Them Is a Lie

Nine rules for the night shift. One of them is a lie. Owen Brandt used to read the fine print for a living, until the insurance company fired him for refusing to blame a dead man for his own house fire. Now he's broke, two weeks late on rent, and ready to take the only job in town that pays thirty-eight dollars an hour, cash: night security at Lakeview General, a hospital that closed in 2019. The guard he's replacing hands him a ring of keys and a laminated card with nine rules on it. Sign your full name. Never get into an elevator that opens for you. Answer the phone, but never say your name. If you see a woman in a white uniform, don't speak to her. "One of those is wrong," the old guard says. "I never figured out which." On his first night, Owen follows every rule exactly. In the morning there's a yellow form waiting in his locker: a written warning, signed by the hospital's night supervisor, who died in a fire in 2009. At the bottom, it says Copy 1 of 3. The next night, the old guard sneaks back in. At 3:17 a.m., Owen watches him shuffle past the security office in a hospital gown, barefoot, in a line of patients who shouldn't exist. To get him out, Owen has to find the rule that's lying before the hospital writes him up a third time.
