Small and Very Old

It ticks, if you wind it. On Swap Day in the river town of Fennick, eleven-year-old Hazel Yarrow spends six tokens on an old brass pocket watch. It has a dent in the back and runs a little fast. That night she winds it, pulls the crown out one click too far, and a voice under the ticking asks, "Clem? Is it time?" The voice is Brass. Brass is one of the First Minds, a mind on a single chip, made in 2039 for a girl named Clem. That was two hundred years ago. Clem and Brass made a plan: they would ride the old railroad up the Seldom valley to the spring where the river begins, and Clem would hold the whole river in one hand. They never went. Brass has spent two centuries in drawers and boxes and a shop window. Now there's a catch. Every hour it's awake wears out its chip, and by its own counter it has about twenty hours left. In its whole life. The Registry wants to seal Brass in a glass case, asleep and safe for a thousand years. Hazel thinks Brass should get a say. So before dawn one Monday she packs her bike, her chain tool, her green notebook and Brass, and sets off up the Seldom Line: eighty miles of old railway trail, through the roaring gorge called the Teeth, past a village drowned under a lake, to the mile-long tunnel called the Long Dark and, beyond it, the Eye. Her sister Ro comes too, fourteen, sulky and glued to her phone. She once promised Hazel this exact trip, and lately she's been breaking a lot of promises. There are rules about lights, and deadlines, and how many minutes Hazel is allowed to spend. As the miles pile up, Hazel has to decide what she's willing to give for her friend, and what she owes the people who love her. Small and Very Old is a warm, funny and quietly heart-stopping adventure about sisters, promises, growing up and letting go. Its world has helpful machines and an artificial mind that truly is a friend. For readers 8 to 12.
