Musical Contrasts in Latin America Sol y sombra, sun and shade. To get a complete picture of Latin American music in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, both types of music must be considered. On the one hand was the Sol: the bright, joyful, festive dances that were found in the fiestas, theatres, courtly palaces, private homes, and streets. On the other hand was the sombra: darker, mystical, liturgical and devotional music that was found in cathedrals, churches, missions, and private chapels. At first these two types of music seem wholly unrelated to each other. Upon closer inspection, however, one finds a connection between the two. Elements of dance and opera are evident in some religious music, and likewise, the somber gravitas of religious music is found in some of the dances. - Scott Pauley
