The Empty Spark

In London, the sun has been reduced to a pale, dirty smudge behind the fog for years, and winter is no longer just a season: it is hungry and scratches at the windowpanes trying to get in. For the children of the Hollin Orphanage, the cold is a constant knife in their bones; for Thomas Candlewick, however, it is a stranger. At twelve years old, while scouring the alleys collecting used matchsticks to survive, Thomas keeps a secret he doesn't even understand himself: his breath doesn't fog in the freezing air, and the live embers of a boiler fail to leave a single blister on his skin. Everything changes the day the gruff inspector Ignatius Flint discovers his anomaly and drags him through the smoking bowels of the earth to Hearthforge Academy, a gothic fortress of iron, copper, and colossal pipes suspended over an abyss of magma. There, the Custodians of the Flame learn that fire doesn't come from nothing: it demands burning the warmest memories of the one who summons it to keep the Mother Flame alive, the only shield keeping the capital from turning into a graveyard of ice. But Thomas has no happy memories to burn, and he soon discovers a much more terrifying truth. He is not a fire generator; he is a void. A sinkhole capable of swallowing both the heat of the machines and the deadly frost of the shadows lurking outside. Branded a monster by his peers and accompanied only by Arthur—a boy buried in thermodynamics manuals—and Elara—heiress to a prestigious lineage who hides her own wound when conjuring fire—Thomas follows the trail of a student erased from the school's archives and a warning carved with a knife beneath his bed: The cold doesn't enter, it is invited. When an icy plague begins draining the students from within the pipes and the solstice night threatens to plunge the castle into darkness for twelve fatal minutes, Thomas will have to decide whether to keep repressing the abyss he carries in his chest or if he is willing to devour the entire storm to save the only home he has ever known.
