The death of Hu Yaobang, a former General Secretary of the Communist Party, in April 1989 served as a catalyst for the protests. Hu was seen by many as a champion of reform, particularly among students and intellectuals, who admired his calls for greater political freedom and anti-corruption measures. His death, viewed by many as a result of the government's failure to address the issues he championed, led to an outpouring of grief and outrage. Thousands of students gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to mourn Hu and demand political reforms.
