Total war brought unimaginable suffering. It also warped humanity's very conception of conflict. War was increasingly seen not as a limited contest between professional armies, but an existential struggle between countries demanding every sacrifice. At its core, this book is about the choices before us as a civilization: will we remain captive to cycles of trauma, dehumanization, and escalating violence?
