Where Old Mother Walks

Fenna is eleven, and she counts everything. She counts the rungs of the ladders, the hens in the coops, the beats her grandmother calls from the Caller's drum. Most of all she counts the slow, enormous footsteps of Old Mother, the giant tortoise whose shell carries the whole village of Mossback across the dunes. Two hundred and twelve people live on her back. They grow beans in her moss, raise goats beside her chimneys, and every dusk they sit at the drums and play the Right Beat, steering her away from the sea, the way their people have done for sixty years. Then Fenna presses her ear to the Soft Plate and hears something under Old Mother's heart. Something small, and many, and fading a little more each night. Nobody else can hear it. Nobody believes her when she tries to tell them. And the more Fenna counts, the clearer the truth becomes: the drumming that keeps Mossback safe is costing Old Mother everything she has left to give. The village has voted. Gran is the Caller. Fenna's best friend Ruel lost his little sister on the hard ground below, and he will not go back down there. Everyone Fenna loves has a reason to keep the drums beating. But Fenna has learned the Left Beat too. Where Old Mother Walks is a wild, tender, unforgettable story about a girl who has to decide what she owes to the people who raised her, and what she owes to a creature older than all of them. It is a story of hard winters and harder choices, of grandmothers and their secrets, and of how a small, stubborn voice can change the direction of a whole world. For readers 9 to 13 who love brave heroines, extraordinary creatures, and books that stay with them long after the last page.
