Qualche maligno vuole che Mike Portnoy, stratosferico drummer della band newyorkese, si cimenti in progetti paralleli perchè si sia, in qualche modo, letteralmente scocciato di suonare la musica dei Dream Theater. Vedi anche le voci su un prossimo ed imminente progetto che lo vede coinvolto con Steven Wilson dei grandi Porcupine Tree - No Man e Blackfield + Mikael Akerfield dei magnifici, gotici ed immensi Opeth! Io non credo del tutto a questa considerazione ma, al cospetto di un disco come questo, come il precedente ed anche come l'altro ancora, non passa in secondo piano, anzi, è accentuata notevolmente una certa "stanchezza" da parte dei Theater che si potrae dai tempi di Six Degrees. Poche idee, canzoni portate avanti con la tenaglia, ripetitività, tecnicismo scontato e fine a se stesso, non come quello geniale e pazzesco dei dischi di tanto tanto tempo fa! Petrucci monotono, anche se mai come nel disco precedente! C'è qualcosa che non quadra nella band che sta rischiando seriamente di fare la patetica fine dei Metallica e degli Iron Maiden. bisogna rivedere un po di cose. Nel complesso questo disco non è del tutto male ma pecca della cosa che ha fatto grande i Theater in passato: l'impreverdibilità e il non senso di un pezzo inteso nella maniera prog classica! Spero che ritornino come una volta, nel senso di cui sopra, non inteso come voglia di un altro "Awake"! Ma dubito vivamente. E se l'ha capito Portnoy! E bravi Wilson e Akerfield! Ma ve lo meritate! Voi si che dell'originalità avete fatto il vostro fine!
A mio avviso, Systematic Chaos è un disco molto molto bello. Ottima la parte strumentale di "In the presence of enemies pt.1" che apre il cd, e poi è tutto un crescendo di emozioni con "Forsaken", "Constant Motion" e la stupenda "The Dark Eternal Night". Si calmano un po' le acque con "Repentance"(che è cmq un bel brano) quarto capitolo della saga Alcolisti anonimi dopo "The Glass Prison", "This Dying Soul" e "The Root Of All Evil". "Prophets of war" ci riporta su livelli più vivaci; "The ministry of lost souls", il brano che preferisco di questo cd, alterna parti + soft ad altre + potenti ed energiche. Molto bella la parte strumentale dopo il secondo ritornello. "In the presence of enemies pt.2" è la seconda parte della suite I.T.P.O.E. ed è un brano caratterizzato dall'alternarsi di melodie e diversi cambi di ritmo. Questa SPECIAL EDITION, include il dvd bonus con il making of dell'album registrato da Portnoy e l'intero album mixato in 5.1 surround. Conclusione: COMPRATELO ma nella versione SPECIAL!!
